This could occur at narrow passages in the terrain, at the entrance to a corral or pen, and when attempting to drive the cattle across a river or other body of water. It was often necessary to break a large herd into smaller groups to avoid this overcrowding. This term may be a calque derived from the Spanish term bola [bóla] 'ball' meaning a large, disorderly crowd. ROMERÍA In Spain romerías are annual religious pilgrimages to chapels and shrines associated with particular saints or miracles of the Virgin. ROMERÍA

Many towns in Spain and Latin America maintain the Christian tradition of going on a romería. This is a pilgrimage to a rural chapel to honour the Virgin Mary or a patron saint. Some of these churches are on sites used by pre-Christian worshippers. People may walk for many miles, praying to the Virgin or saint for a special favour, showing gratitude for a previous one or praying for healing. The pilgrimages are often festive occasions where music and food play a key role.

Santamaría references it as a herd of livestock, generally cattle, gathered for any purpose, but especially for a cattle drive.
